En Nyhed: Term 4 - 2006
GROUP LEADER
‘TK’s mutterings
Welcome to all our members and families old and new, I hope you enjoy your time with us and that you feel part of the Port Noarlunga Sea Scout Group family. I am going to tell you a little bit about what we have been getting up to and a few snippets of information.
District dinner
On 26th August the Leader Team from Port Noarlunga Sea Scout Group turned out in full force with all sections represented in one form or another for a District Leaders Dinner at the Flagstaff Hotel. Kerry (ASL) and Lesley (ACSL) were so committed to the event they came away from a State Rover Moot (camp) with a Spaghetti Western theme to be with us; they went straight back there after the dinner for more fun and Wild West action! Thanks Ladies.
Skit night
It was great to see so many parents, caregivers, friends and youth members at the skit night. I thank the Leaders for preparing their members so well and I applaud again the presentation by the youth members. It was a very enjoyable evening. There seems to be a running theme at these group events, I got wet again, thanks to Care Bear and those mischievous scouts!! Thanks also to the scouts for allowing us to visit their Construction Camp it was a great opportunity for the other sections to see what you scouts get up to and what they have to look forward to.
Royal show
Alan Baker (ACSL), Chris Gariyasa, (AJSL & Rover) Gillian Gariyasa (AJSL) Pete Beaumont (JSL), Kerry Green (ASL & Rover) Leah Turner (Cub mum) and I assisted in the promotion of scouting generally when we staffed the scout tent at the Royal Adelaide show.
Visitors to the tent were able to do a challenge course which consisted of rope walk, beam walk, ball throw, cargo net crawl, tunnelling and caving. Many visitors went round several times. As a result of the activity over 1027 new member referrals were made (not all for PNSS!!). The stand won first prize for the non- agricultural outdoor display which is judged on a number of things including staff interaction and presentation. Fun was had by all and we were given a very nice blue polo shirt for our efforts (not to mention the free pass into the show). Well done everyone.
Sailing Fun Day
Well what can I say but WOW!!! How thrilled were the Leader team to see so many eager Joeys, Cubs and Scouts at the Sailing Fun Day at West Lakes on Sunday 22nd October. We were blessed with a beautiful day, not too hot, not too windy, the water was warm. We had a little wait at the start for our Patrol Boats to be inspected (an annual requirement) they both passed.
Kerry (ASL) and David (ASL) our two 'boat charge holders' gave excellent service to our youth members by making countless trips on the Lake.
The members and their families enjoyed rowing, sailing and ball games. It was wonderful to see so many new faces at this event too; we had 4 people use this event as a 'come and try'. Thanks to all the families for getting our youth there and to the Leaders for their support of this event.
Leader update
We have said goodbye to Dean French who has left the group due to personal reasons, he was an Assistant Joey Scout Leader, we thank him for his time and energy and wish him well for the future.
Tony Wright (Mayu) was a Part-time Activity Leader (PAL) in the Joey Section, he has taken the plunge and will now be an Assistant Joey Scout Leader. On yer Tony!!
The following people are in the process of applying to become PALs:
Dee Stefanek as a PAL in Joeys & Cubs, Dee now has 2 Joeys, a Cub (soon to be scout) and a Scout at the group.
Leonie West as a PAL in Cubs & Scouts, Leonie has a Cub and possibly a Scout at the group.
Nicole Roberts as a PAL in Joeys & Cubs, Nicole has a Joey and 2 Cubs at the group.
I know all our leaders value our PALS, they are a vital part of our leader team. I would like to say a big 'Welcome Aboard' to all of you, thank you for your enthusiasm and commitment to our group and sections. I have seen and heard great things about you all!!
Parents and Friends Committee Support Team -a personal request
Over the last year I have concentrated my efforts on getting our scout section back on track and on the recruitment of leaders. I am a very happy Groupie at the moment as both of these objectives are being realised as a direct result of a great team approach across the sections.
We are experiencing growth in numbers across all sections which is wonderful. We are beginning to get that ‘family feel’ back into the group especially when families participate in group events where they meet each other.
The Sea Scout Section of Scouts Australia -SA Branch is under new management, the new Commissioner needs the support of its groups at planning meetings so that we can take the Sea Scouts forward.
Our Leader team is committed to training, this takes up a considerable amount of time and effort in addition to planning and delivering the weekly program. So you see we Leaders are somewhat time poor. Not to mention of course the demands in our work and family lives.
What our group desperately needs is a team of people that can support me
in running the group
We have a variety of things we need to plan, make decisions about and soon if we are to sustain our growth and give our youth members the fun filled time in scouting that they deserve. We being the operative word!!
Our leader team is doing their bit, frankly I need parents and friends to do their bit. Of course it goes without saying that I am glad of the support already being given by a certain few people. However I need more voices and attendance of parents at our Parents and Friends meetings. I have not unilaterally changed the name by the way, but I do think ‘team’ is a more accurate description.
Please come along to the next meeting on Thursday 9th November at 6.30 (it’s only for an hour). Your contribution will be a tremendous support to the Leader team.
Tracey Kalaitzis (TK)
Group Leader
JOEYS REPORT
Another good Term. Everyone had fun. This Term has started well. TK lead a night as part of her training. If you would like more information on our Term programme please see the noticeboard.
Kookaburra
CUBS REPORT
We welcome you all back to what promises to be an intensive, challenging and above all, fun program for Cubs in the last term of the year.
We have a number of themes this term. We will certainly have the opportunity to get out on the water and have some fun in the patrol boats. We hopefully won’t get too scared on Halloween night so that later on we can show our artistic talents in a number of ways. We’ll be preparing the boats for the Christmas Pageant, entering a United Nations children’s art competition and helping to design the Group’s 40th anniversary badge.
If this isn’t enough, then we’ll also be star gazing, culminating in a visit to the planetarium and ending our term with a spot of fishing and a beach party.
Our opening night will have an emphasis on re-enforcing the formal side of Cub Scouts and the protocol for ceremonies and uniform. In common with previous terms there will also be opportunity for the Cubs to attain a number of achievement badges and work towards either their Bronze, Silver or Gold Boomerang awards. There are also a few Cubs that could work towards the highest award that a Cub Scout can attain, the Grey Wolf Award.
The Leaders and PALs feel very privileged to have assisted a number of Cubs obtain their Achievement Badges. During this coming term, badges will be presented for First Aid, Entertainer, Cooking and Codes and Signals.
As ever, all the leaders will offer encouragement and guidance for any Cub that would like to achieve over and above what is offered in a term’s programming. The leaders are a resource to help your child achieve, so please use us.
Christmas is fast approaching and after the Southern Community Christmas Pageant, we will have our Group social event where we will meet back at the hall for games, water activities and food.
If you would like to receive this and other Port Noarlunga Cub Scout information electronically by e-mail, then please let me know at the address below and then you can be one of the first to know of up and coming events and programs.
If you have any concerns or comments on any aspect of this program, please do not hesitate to contact any of your leaders:
If your child enjoys the program, then be sure to tell their friends and relatives. The more the merrier!!
Don't forget, Scouts SA and Port Noarlunga Sea Scouts practices the sun-safe policy so:
- Always bring a wide brimmed hat (any colour) for any outside activity (all activities during term 1 & 4). For formal activities, such as Act of Loyalty, this should be blue
- Always bring a water bottle to any section night and activity.
- Please also ensure that Cubs wear closed in shoes for all activities, thongs and sandals are not acceptable
SCOUTS REPORT
Congratulations are in order for a great track record: - two, out of two, successful terms in a row, and this is due mainly to the efforts of Sparky (Anne Ritchie- District Scout Leader) and our trainee Leader Team. Sparky has returned to District duties and we thank her immensely for all her help since our humble beginnings back in May.
Our success has also being due to the excellent attendance of the Scouts and the support from their families in enabling them to attend the numerous activities in a wide variety of locations. It is always a concern for leaders with few members but our youth members have been committed and enthusiastic, great foundations for a strong section.
Our Troop is forming quite well and I was pleased to hand out some well earned Badges last term.
- A special campfire on Investiture Night made it an event to remember. Five tenderfoots had a unique “Going up Ceremony” and initiation by Fire.
- Invitations to joint activities with Happy Valley and Hallett Cove made for some very interesting experiences. We got a Mystery Dinner on our “Shipwreck” Camp- The labels washed off our tinned food. Luckily nobody cooked the Stew and the Creamed Rice together.
- An American “Eagle Scout” taught us some nifty knotting tricks too.
- Our budding actors spent weeks memorising their lines for Skit Night and it turned out to be more fun than the kids expected. Their mimed sketch worked out really well too.
- The Barbecue Pixies paid us a visit on Construction Camp- the eyes all disappeared from the bacon rashers at breakfast time. Guess we’ll have to increase rations next time around.
All in all, we have a great troop, showing mateship and co-operative teamwork. Kerry, Carebear and Skip are getting the hang of things, also working well as a team; they are committed to training and developing the section.
Since the original draft of this review we have had a number of prospective members come along and try us out. Last term we welcomed Lindsay, Taylor and Zoe to visit on some of our troop nights, this term we have had visits from Alisha and Amber. Sean and his friend Tony joined us at the Jamboree of the Air. Alex and Molly joined in the Sail Fun Day activities. If all these visitors join up we will have increased the section to 15 which would be over 100%!! The greater the number of Scouts means we can experience the fun that inter-patrol challenges can offer us. So we welcome you all.
We’ll have a few evenings next term set aside to bring a friend; the more, the merrier! Also if you have a friend that joins as a Scout you are rewarded by Scouts Australia and will receive a cool gift. We will all benefit if we can get our Troop numbers up to ten or more turning up each Wednesday.
We will be concentrating on Water Safety and Water Activities (sailing/ rowing) in Term 4, working towards the Sea Scout Regatta on March 17th next year.
by Skip (Bill Murray Scout Leader)
Each youth member should have received a car sticker with our group name, logo and website address. Please display these on your cars if you can. If you have not received one please ask your section leader.
Many thanks to Kym Roberts for making these, they will assist with the promotion of our group. Kym is dad to Kelsey (Joey), Allyse and Jesselin (Cubs). If you are able to put a flyer in your car window or on a notice board at work or your local post office/shop/library/surgery then please let me know so that we can co-ordinate our publicity. If you have any thoughts on how we can promote our group to encourage new members or leaders please speak to me. TK
PNSS Logo badges and scarves
Thanks to Ernie Ames for his contribution to the group. Ernie is a retired engineer; he has been helping us keep our costs down by making our PNSS logo badges. Each one takes 15 minutes to make; he has made over 50 for us so far.
Janet Williams has been making our scarves for us, she is a full-time mum and part-time training administrator at Branch HQ. Thanks Janet.
Jamboree on the Air 21st October
Another great turn out from PNSS. A number of members of the group managed to speak to guides and scouts from around the country including; a Guide Unit from Geelong who were at a JOTA camp on the Great Ocean Road; a local at McLaren flat, I think it was an aunt of one of the Joeys; also a Scout Troop from Mt Evalind in Victoria and a Scout Troop in Queensland.
HALL HIRE
Please note our hall is available for hire to members please contact me for enquiries. TK
MORNING TEA WITH JOHN HOWARD……….
Chris Ganly (Treasurer), Dingo, Akela and TK represented the group when they attended a morning tea with the Prime Minister in August. They stood at the very back of the sports hall of Wirreanda High School, whilst District Commissioner Louise Heywood sat in poll position on the front row directly in front of the PM, a bit like the teacher and the back row kids in school, our representatives were on their best behaviour (honest)!! The boys had their photographs taken and had a chat with the PM whilst TK had to dash back to work. It was nice to see Ben Macmichael there too representing his school.

I cannot stress enough how important it is that youth members observe the very important safety requirements, these are not in place to make life difficult but to keep members safe. Please support your youth member and their leaders by observing these requirements.
Mosquitoes: We are coming into the warmer weather, we are based near a river, mosquitoes can cause some discomfort. Please take your own preventative measures in terms of repellents.
If you are aware of any health or safety issue please inform the Leader team as soon as it arises, thank you.
TK
UNIFORM
Just as important as health and safety is that youth members observe the uniform requirements, again these are not in place to make life difficult but to keep members smart, it identifies them for the leaders when out on excursions, it is a place for displaying achievement badges. Please support your youth member and their leaders by observing the requirements. You should have received a copy of the uniform policy by now, if not please see your section leader. Leaders will make it clear for all activities what uniform is required.
South Australian Branch World Scout Day Good Service Awards 2006
We congratulate CHRIS GANLY, Committee Treasurer at our Group on the receipt of the CERTIFICATE OF MERIT awarded in recognition of Good Service to the Scout Movement
Citation written by Andre Botha former Group Leader:
Chris became involved in Scouting when his two sons joined Pt Noarlunga Sea Scout Group. At all times Chris supported the Group, Leaders and Committee in every way possible. He joined the Parent Committee from the outset, immediately taking on the role as Bottle Drive Co-ordinator. At the following Annual General Meeting he took on the role as Deputy Chairperson then Chairperson before moving to Treasurer.
Chris attends the Scout Hall most evenings when Sections met handing out notes, speaking to Parents and encouraging them to take part in Group activities. He regularly towed a watercraft to activities even when his sons were not involved in the activity. Due to shortages in Leaders with Charges, Chris achieved his Canoe Charge and regularly took Youth Members canoeing.
His assistance in the last three Jamboree has been invaluable, repairing equipment up to standard for the Jamborees. He assisted in the promotion 'Scouts Alive' when Leaders were tin on the ground. His assistance to me as Group Leader was invaluable in many aspects of Scouting.
In situations where there was a conflict or misunderstanding by parties, Chris' training as a Counsellor was called upon and helped to resolve a number of situations. Chris had a rare quality being able to disagree with people without offending them.
Chris has an excellent rapport with all the Youth Members in the Group; he made a point of speaking to Youth Members whenever possible from Joey Scouts through to Rovers.
Well done Chris and thanks for your continued support of the group. TK
HOW TO SUPPORT YOUR SECTION LEADERS
- Please arrive in plenty of time for section nights- opening ceremonies need to start on time
- Please get parent advice forms in on time
- Please pay fees promptly
- Please deal with any issues/concerns as they arise not after it is too late
- Please deal with queries well before the section meeting starts, or after a meeting whichever your section leaders prefers, section nights are crammed with activity and instruction, leaders need to prepare materials for the night and also would like to commence on time and get home on time
- Please offer your help on section nights if you can
Beach Ramp fee collection at Silver Sands, Aldinga
READ ON TO FIND OUT HOW: For the last 2 years the group has contracted with the Onkaparinga Council to collect their fees on the beach ramp at Silver Sands, Aldinga. We are doing the same again this year. This will bring revenue of $2000.00 plus 33% of the daily takings at $5 per car that can be a lot of money.
This job requires volunteers from the Group for the whole of the school holidays on days of 25 degrees or more (sometimes even on those days we may not have to attend in the event of strong winds or storms but if your name is on the roster for that slot you will still get credit). Shades will be provided and full details of the job will be given to all volunteers.
We have found that it is helpful to split the day into 2 roster periods called slots. There is no need to spend the whole day at the ramp the roster can be very flexible, there are a number of ways to share the slots e.g.
- 2 families can get together to share a whole day
- share a morning or an afternoon slot discount will be given pro rata- this arrangement may appeal to those families with young children, so one adult could keep an eye on the children the other collect the money
- the volunteers do not have to be parents of the youth members, you can send a friend or relative
- we only need to cover 55 slots
Please support the Beach Ramp fund-raiser, it is easy compared to many other forms of fundraising. I have put up a roster on the red noticeboard in the foyer at the hall.
Each slot covered will attract a $10 discount on term fees AND a $20 credit towards future activities as indicated in the future discount policy e.g. Hoporees, Cuborees, Jamborees, Activate Team Challenge to name but a few. So if you put your name down for 4 slots that is $40 off your term fees and $80 towards future activities. WOW!!
Please bear in mind that for me to make numerous calls to families costs me a lot of time and money. For you to call me to offer one morning or one afternoon is more economical and makes my life a lot easier. Bear in mind also that there will be a number of people doing both the beach ramp and the Australia Day Breakfast so please do your bit for the group. With this money we can do wonderful things next year. Be sure to select your slots soon, they will book up fast. Any queries please ask TK
Group Communications
Please keep looking in the window, the notice-board, newsletters and committee minutes for updates.
Are you getting enough information? Is there anything you need to know more about? Please let Tracey know, a note in her wardroom tray, an email or a telephone call
