En Nyhed: Term 3 - 2006

GROUP LEADER

 Dear all,

Overview of term two

It was great to see all sections with their families take part in the Jamboree on the Trail in May, I have checked with the organisers in Canberra and according to them, we were the only scout group in SA to have participated. Thanks to Dingo, Pete Beaumont for giving us the heads up on that one. We hope to get some pictures on our website and the JOTT website soon.

We supported the ‘Discovery’ event at Seaford Skate Park on 24th June by erecting our mess tent to provide shelter for the band and the coffee sellers, we also helped other stall holders carry their wares. Thanks to Baloo, Alan Baker for his tireless efforts with the tent and staying with me for the afternoon. It was terrific of Lisa and Lizzie (Cubs) and Shane (Scouts) to attend with their families, many thanks for lending a hand. We have received a card of thanks from the organisers and made another community connection that may lead to other things in the future.

The group campfire on Thursday 6th July was very well attended. Thanks to all parents who helped with food preparation, ‘crowd control’ and pack-up. The night went well without any accidents (other than my own…I will put in an equipment requisition to the committee for three more fire-pit covers!!!).

Thanks to Baloo, Kangaroo, Kookaburra and Mowgli for their pre-fire efforts; clearing the fire circle of debris/old television sets, provision of wood/sticks, de-coring of apples etc. These events are great fun, I hope to see many more. If you think of an event that you would like us to run please speak to your

section leader or me or drop a note in my GL tray in the wardroom.

I wish to congratulate Arielle and Lizzie (Cubs) who helped the environment by participating in the Murray Darling River Rescue on Saturday 8th July, between them they carried and planted 58 trees. Well done to you both.

The newly formed Scout Section had a very busy term, it is all credit to the leaders, the youth members themselves and the families working together as a team. To finish their first term together with a camp at Woodhouse is a tremendous achievement, well done to all of you for your commitment, energy and enthusiasm. Thanks also to Sparky (District Scout Leader) and Louise Heywood (District/Commissioner) for their support of our section and its activities this term.

I recently attended assembly at Seaford Rise Primary School and was really pleased to see four of our youth members stand out front with the Head teacher to be congratulated on their artistic achievements in Aboriginal Dot Painting. Well done Kelsey, (Joey) Allyse, Tom and Braydon, (Cubs).

Leader update

It was a great privilege to be able to invest six leaders at the group campfire, some of whom have been in scouting a long, long time and others who are relatively new to this wonderful game of scouting. Congratulations and thanks to David, Kerry, Lesley, John, Dean and Amelia. Unfortunately, Tony wasn’t able to make it but he will be invested in term 3.

If you are interested in becoming an assistant leader in a section, please let me know.
There are many roles in scouting, being a leader is only one of them, if you would like to help but feel you can’t commit to every night or undertake training ask me about being a PAL (Part-time Activity Leader).

Committee

The AGM was somewhat of a disappointment given that we did not have any families attend. This was a shame as the leaders had gone to a lot of trouble to make things interesting by providing displays. Julie Wheatley supplied a tremendous fayre, most of it home cooked. I would like to thank all committee members past and present for their contributions and I welcome the new members. Thanks to all those who nominated. I look forward to working with you.

Our partners in the community from Rotary attended as well as Brian and Gwen Wilson, Helen Collins, Paola Davis who are all past leaders at our group and I thank them all.

I hope to see more families support the group in the future, we have a lot of fun.

more helpers= less work= even more fun!!

SHOWTIME
At the Adelaide Show in September Scouts Australia will have a display tent where scouts and potential scouts can try their hand at various activities. As adults in scouting we all get the chance to help out at the tent by giving out leaflets, helping with activities, talking to families, in return we get a free scouts tee-shirt (extremely good quality) and free entry to the show, all they ask is for you to help for 4 hours, so just think ……..catch the early train, have a wander round then do your turn in the tent or do your turn then wander around. They have hours to suit, they usually like you to choose a morning, afternoon or evening slot. More details nearer the time.

JOEY SECTION REPORT

We have had a very busy term and the Joeys have had a great time. Next term we will be just as busy. Look on the notice board if you would like to know what we are up to.
We would like to say thank you to all our helpers, Leaders and parents that helped us every week.
Kookaburra.

100TH BIRTHDAY OF SCOUTING
40TH BIRTHDAY OF THE PORT NOARLUNGA SEA SCOUT GROUP
Next year marks 100 years of scouting and the 40th birthday of our group, we need to start planning our celebrations, are there any parents or friends that have experience of co-ordinating such an event or would like to help out? We need ideas, thinkers and doers so get your thinking caps on. Support the group with this event, be in it from the start.
Please speak to TK, Tracey (GL) if you would like to help.

Group Skit Night - 9th September
There will be a stage presentation from all sections, it will last approximately one and half hours and there will be refreshments. Given that leaders will be ‘back stage’ with their youth members please can I have offers of help from families in setting up, turning urns on, pack up at the end.

The scout section will be camping at the hall that night so you will be able to see our equipment in full glory!

"Singing and acting are excellent for training in self-expression. Also they mean good team work, everybody learning his part and doing it well, not for applause for himself but for the success of the whole show." - Baden Powell

The Noarlunga District Team Quiz night 16th September
This is a fundraiser for the District Team, amongst other things they supply training to leaders in the area, laying wreaths on Anzac Day on behalf of the Noarlunga Scouting District, as a scout group we have to pay a levy to our District Team to keep them in funds, the more funds they raise the lower the levy so please support the quiz night. Again more information coming up.

Fundraising Co-ordinator
Due to unforeseen circumstances we have a vacancy for a fundraising co-ordinator. Basically this role entails obtaining information about possible fundraising activities e.g. chocolate drive, lamington sales, car boot sales, raffles, whatever…..the idea is that the co-ordinator organises and plans the fundraising throughout the year but does not necessarily do the fundraising. It is a group responsibility to fundraise; the members of the group are the families and the leaders. The idea is that he or she co-ordinates the families in the group.

We need at least one major fundraiser per term, historically we have had the Australia Day Breakfast in term 1, car boot sale in term 2, chocolate drive in term 3, Beach Ramp Job in term 4. There have been various raffles in between not to mention our very successful quiz nights.

We have a heap of car boot sale things ready to go, this could be held at our hall or at the Original Open Market.

We always try to use our fundraising activities as a publicity opportunity where possible.

This role involves someone preparing and editing notices, reminders, ensures the group program and contact list are update and publicised, liaises with the webmaster in relation to the website, arranges displays, promotional activities, newspaper articles, develops liaison with council and other local community groups e.g. Rotary. This position provides an additional link between the group council and the group committee.

If you are interested in either of the above roles or know of someone who may be interested please contact Tracey, Group Leader 8327 2836, 0423 495 582 jewts@bipgond.com.au

Also more parent reps for the committee are required for decision making, planning etc……………..please

REMEMBER your contributions are valuable and can earn a $15 per term discount on fees

HERE IS AN IDEA FOR YOUR SCOUT BLANKET….sew on old uniform, scarves, badges, emblems, pendants, pretty much anything at all …..this photograph came from the website of Derwent Sea Scouts, Hobart District, Tasmania. You may notice the blanket on the right has been made into a poncho, ideal for cold nights at camp.
